This page defines all categories in the BrickLink reference catalog. Categories are sorted in alphabetical order and definitions take up no more than a single line on the page. To request changes to category definitions, post a catalog request in the discussion forum.

Items are categorized by placing them into the categories where they most naturally fit, usually meaning where they are deemed most likely to be found. Similar items should be grouped together in the same category whenever possible.

The following categorization criteria should be used for items in the Parts item type in descending order:

  1. Building System/Theme - If the part is specific to one building system and is primarily or only compatible with other parts from that system (Bionicle, Duplo, Galidor, Modulex, Znap, etc.), the part is placed into the appropriate themed category. If the part is used in multiple systems this criteria may be skipped.

  2. Composition - If the material of the part is cloth, foam, paper, a thin sheet of plastic, or is in some other way a non-standard part, the part is placed into the appropriate category. This includes parts with electronics or magnetic features.

  3. Use/Function - If the part is primarily used as figure headgear, a wheel, a sheet of stickers, a hinge, a fence, to display an effect of energy, to launch a projectile, or some other defined use or function, the part is placed into the appropriate category.

  4. Shape - If the part is shaped like a cone, a slope, a wedge, a brick, or some other defined shape, the part is placed into the appropriate category.

  5. Other Criteria - If the part has not been categorized using the above criteria and does not fit into another existing category (Special Assembly, for example), then it may be necessary to modify the definition of an existing category or create a new category.

Hierarchal categorization systems for LEGO items are imperfect and inconsistencies are the result. The goal of this page and the guidelines it contains are to reduce inconsistencies, not completely eliminate them.


Numbers

  • 4 Juniors - For Jack Stone, Creator, and 4+ items.
  • 4.5V - For 4.5-volt train sets and related items.
  • 9V - For 9-volt train sets and related items.
  • 12V - For 12-volt train sets and related items.

  • Accessory Pack - For items, typically themed, that include a mix of different accessories which are typically of more than one item type.
  • Accessory, Human Tool - For items intended to facilitate human interaction with LEGO parts.
  • Action Wheelers - For a themed line of Duplo sets and other items similar to Toolo and featuring the use of tools.
  • Activity Book - For books that include multiple things to occupy time, such as puzzles, stickers, image coloring, set building, and similar activities.
  • Advent - For sets that include a number of sub-sets intended to be opened and built daily during a specified period of time, typically December.
  • Advent Sub-Set - For the small individual sets included in Advent sets.
  • Adventure Time - For sets and other items related to the TV show of the same name.
  • Adventurers - For themed sets and other items that featured world travel and exploration.
  • AFOL Designer Program - For sets and other items designed by fans, sponsored by TLG, and released by BrickLink.
  • Agents - For a themed line of sets and other items that featured spying activities.
  • Agori - For a line of sets and related items released primarily in 2009 that were a sub-theme of Bionicle.
  • Aircraft - For items used on flying vehicles.
  • Aircraft, Decorated - For title-defined parts with printed, stickered, or molded patterns, including combined pattern application methods.
  • Airjitzu Flyers - For a reworded Ninjago Spinjitzu sub-theme.
  • Airport - For sets and other items relating to air travel.
  • Alien Conquest - For a themed line of Space style sets featuring extraterrestrial invasion.
  • Alpha Team - For a themed line of sets and other items.
  • Animal, Accessory - For items used by, used on, or made by real or imaginary animals such as blankets, saddles, and honeycombs.
  • Animal, Air - For real or imaginary creatures capable of flight or closely related to creatures capable of flight.

  • Animal, Land - For real or imaginary creatures naturally at home on land.
  • Animal, Water - For real or imaginary creatures naturally at home in water.
  • Animal Series 1 - For package-marked Friends animal-themed sets released in 2013.
  • Animal Series 2 - For package-marked Friends animal-themed sets released in 2013.
  • Animal Series 3 - For package-marked Friends animal-themed sets released in 2013.
